Inspiration

1 in 5 college students struggle with mental health during major life transitions graduating, starting a new job, moving to a new city, or navigating relationship changes. While mental health apps exist, they're often fragmented, inaccessible, and disconnect users from real human support. We designed MindFlow to bridge this gap.

What it does

MindFlow is an accessible mental health platform combining three core features:

  1. AI-Powered Mood Tracking – Users start their day with a judgment-free check-in, tracking emotions with simple mood circles (Happy, Good, Okay, Bad, Crisis)
  2. Intelligent Peer Matching – Connect with others navigating similar transitions based on transition type and timeline
  3. Crisis Resources – One-tap access to 988 Crisis Line, Crisis Text Line, local counselors, and peer support

The entire experience is designed with accessibility at its core (WCAG AA compliant, dark mode, dyslexia-friendly fonts, voice navigation, large touch targets).

How we built it

  • Frontend: React with Tailwind CSS for responsive design
  • Design: Mobile-first approach using Figma prototyping
  • Accessibility: WCAG AA standards integrated from day one, not as an afterthought
  • User Research: Focused on understanding the mental health context and designing for empathy

We built a fully interactive prototype with 5 screens, dark mode toggle, text size adjustment, and working navigation. All features are functional and demonstrate the complete user journey.

Challenges we ran into

Design Challenge: Balancing powerful features with simplicity. Mental health apps can overwhelm users we prioritized clarity and psychological safety.

Accessibility Challenge: We realized that designing for accessibility first (not last) creates a better experience for everyone. Features like dark mode and text sizing benefit all users, not just those with disabilities.

Empathy Challenge: Designing for mental health requires careful language and visual design. Every button, color, and interaction matters psychologically.

Accomplishments we're proud of

  1. WCAG AA Compliant from Day One – Accessibility is foundational, not bolted on
  2. Intelligent Peer Matching Algorithm – Matches based on transition type AND timeline, reducing isolation through relatability
  3. Emotionally Resonant Design – Every interaction feels supportive, calming, and non-judgmental
  4. Fully Functional MVP – Five complete screens with real navigation, dark mode, text sizing, and interactive elements
  5. Feasible at Scale – Clear roadmap for university partnerships and professional integration

What we learned

Accessibility isn't a limitation—it's a superpower. By designing for people with disabilities first, we created a better experience for everyone. We also learned that peer support is as important as professional help; combining both creates real impact.

What's next

Phase 1 (Months 1–2): Launch beta with university counseling centers. Validate the concept with real users and gather feedback.

Phase 2 (Months 3–4): Integrate with licensed therapists and professional counseling platforms. Expand crisis resource partnerships.

Phase 3 (Months 5+): Expand to other life transitions (career changes, health challenges, relationship transitions). Scale to national mental health ecosystem.

Long-term: Become the first stop for anyone navigating major life changes—a place where technology bridges self-care and human connection.
