Inspiration

A lot of my friends and I have a ton of stress dealing with finals, social media, and thinking college. A lot of students deal with this every day, but many don’t know where to go for help or feel overwhelmed trying to find information. I wanted to make something easy to use that could actually help someone quickly.

What it does

MindEase is a free, wellness app designed specifically for high school students. It offers:

  • Mood Check-ins: Students select how they're feeling and get personalized responses
  • Guided Breathing Exercise: A calming 30-second breathing animation to help reduce stress plays and tries to guide them through breathing
  • Motivational Quotes: Uplifting messages to boost confidence and hopefully their mood
  • 5-Minute Focus Timer: A Pomodoro timer to help with productivity and studying
  • Crisis Resources: Direct access to 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and other mental health support

How I built it

I built MindEase using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to keep it easy, fast, and accessible on any device. You don't need to download it or sign-up for it. I tried to make it simple and inviting with calming colors and smooth animations. I used CSS animations for the breathing exercise and JavaScript for interactive features like the timer and quote generator.

Challenges I faced

  • Balancing simplicity with functionality: I wanted useful tools without overwhelming users who are already stressed
  • Creating genuine emotional impact: Making sure the tone felt supportive
  • Inclusion: Ensuring the app works for students with different stress levels
  • Designing effective breathing animations: Getting the timing and visual to move correctly was pretty hard

What I learned

I learned how to create an app for emotional well-being. Usually I'm focusing on how to add all the features to my code but it was fun to think of how the user will feel when they're using this one which was different. I also had to look up what people want when they're stressed and what helps people the most. The breathing animation was also cool to make.

What's next for MindEase

  • Mood tracking over time: Help students see patterns and their progress
  • More exercises: Add more exercises to help people relax and maybe a journal
  • Add it to school: I might see if my guidance counselor has a way to add it to their list of support resources

Impact Potential

There are about 15 million high school students in the US and mental health is the main concern for students. MindEase could be an easy to use app that they all use when they're feeling down. It would be free and can be used whenever from their phone.
