🧠 Inspiration
As teenagers, we all face stress, anxiety, and overwhelming emotions — especially during exams and social challenges. Most teens don't know where to turn or feel embarrassed to ask for help. I wanted to create a safe, judgment-free space where any teen can express how they feel and get instant, compassionate support powered by AI.
🔨 What I Built
MindEase is an AI-powered mental health companion designed specifically for teenagers. It allows users to:
- Select their current mood (Happy, Anxious, Sad, Stressed, Numb)
- Write a short journal entry about how they're feeling
- Receive instant AI-generated personalized support and practical tips
- Track their mood history over time
- Access emergency crisis helpline numbers instantly
⚙️ How I Built It
- Frontend: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript
- AI: OpenRouter API (free AI models)
- Database: localStorage JSON (mood history)
- IDE: NetBeans
- Hosting: GitHub Pages
📚 What I Learned
- How to integrate AI APIs into a web application
- Building responsive and accessible UI for mental health apps
- Importance of empathetic design when building for vulnerable users
- Working with free AI models and handling API fallbacks
🚧 Challenges I Faced
- Finding a completely free AI API that works reliably
- Making the AI responses feel warm and teen-appropriate
- Designing a calming UI that feels safe and welcoming
- Handling cases when free AI models are busy or unavailable
💙 Impact
MindEase helps teens feel heard and supported instantly — anytime, anywhere, completely free. Mental health support should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford therapy.
