Inspiration

"We met my friend in nasik who said, ‘My anxiety attacks don’t wait for WiFi.’ That hit hard. Today’s mental health apps need internet, English, or deep pockets. We built MindCare to change that." We noticed most mental health apps don’t work offline, ignore regional languages, or cost too much. As students from India, we wanted to build something private, affordable, and truly global—especially for people who can’t access Western apps like BetterHelp. My cousin’s struggle with anxiety (and lack of Hindi support in apps) sparked the idea.

What it does

Listens to your voice and detects stress/depression—even without internet.

Lets you video-call therapists (TicTac) or try art therapy when sad. Works in Hindi, Spanish, Tamil, etc. and has no passwords (just face/voice login). Alerts KIRAN helpline if someone’s suicidal. Free for basics, paid for full features.

How we built it

Voice Analysis: Used Google’s AI tools to train on real Indian voices (not just US accents). Had to record our own dataset since public ones were too Western. AI Brain: Gemma 3 (the small version) runs locally—compressed it to fit on phones. Art Therapy: Modified a lightweight drawing AI to suggest prompts like "sketch your mood." TicTac: Built with WebRTC; hardest part was making it work on slow Indian networks.

Challenges we ran into

Voice detection failed for rural accents → Added more local voice samples. Art AI was too slow → Switched to pre-made templates instead of live generation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Got it to understand mixed Hindi-English slang (e.g., "I’m feeling udaas"). A teacher from a blind school tested it and said: "This actually works with VoiceOver."

What we learned

Mental health AI can’t be one-size-fits-all—Tamil users needed different prompts than Spanish ones. Privacy is non-negotiable—people refused to test until we proved no data left their phone.

What's next for MindCare

Add sign language for deaf users (partnering with an NGO). Indian Government pilot with KIRAN to reach villages. Sell to schools at ₹10/month (most requested feature).
