MindCare: AI-Powered Mental Wellness Platform
Inspiration
The rising mental health challenges among Indian youth inspired us to create a platform that feels empathetic, engaging, and stigma-free. We wanted to blend technology with cultural sensitivity so that seeking help feels natural and approachable.
What it does
MindCare provides an AI-driven companion that supports text and voice-based conversations enriched with expressions and gestures through a VRM avatar. It also integrates gamified wellness activities like mood check-ins, karma points, and streaks to encourage long-term habit-building.
How we built it
We developed the frontend in React.js, integrating a VRM avatar with text-to-speech for realistic interactions.
The backend was built with Node.js/Express.js, connected to PostgreSQL (via GCP Cloud SQL) for secure and reliable data management.
We deployed services on Google Cloud Run, ensuring scalability and low-latency performance.
For intelligence, we integrated Google Gemini AI to generate empathetic, context-aware conversations and used emotion-adaptive responses to enhance immersion.
Challenges we ran into
- Voice responses were too long, requiring us to optimize prompt design for concise, conversational replies.
- Synchronizing avatar gestures with speech while keeping latency low.
- Balancing cultural sensitivity in AI responses to ensure relevance for Indian youth.
- Managing scalable deployment across frontend, backend, and database while minimizing cost.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a first-of-its-kind AI avatar-based wellness assistant tailored for Indian youth.
- Deployed a fully functional cloud-native platform with scalable GCP services.
- Designed a gamified wellness system to improve user engagement and retention.
- Implemented smart crisis detection to provide proactive, safe intervention.
What we learned
- How to fine-tune AI conversation design for empathy and brevity.
- Best practices for deploying multi-service applications on Google Cloud (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL).
- The importance of UX design in building trust and engagement in mental wellness applications.
- Strategies to merge technology with cultural sensitivity in a socially impactful project.
What's next for MindCare: AI-Powered Mental Wellness Platform
- Expanding to regional Indian languages for wider accessibility.
- Adding 24/7 integration with licensed therapists and helplines.
- Enhancing avatar realism with emotion recognition from voice/tone.
