Inspiration

We were inspired by the growing mental health crisis and the gap between clinical services and accessible, everyday tools for emotional well-being. Breathwork and mindfulness have deep scientific and cultural roots, but they are often hard to sustain alone. We wanted to create an open, immersive way for people to learn, practice, and heal together through VR.

What it does

Mindbreath VR is a virtual environment where users can: Practice guided breathwork, meditation, and relaxation techniques. Join live events and group sessions that foster community support. Track progress with interactive feedback, making inner calm measurable. Access open-source tools and environments that can be remixed, shared, and extended.

How we built it

Designed immersive worlds in Horizon that encourage calm through natural landscapes and interactive breathing guides.

Integrated VR scripting tools to build interactive breathing assets and visual feedback loops (e.g. expanding spheres that sync with inhale/exhale).

Built tutorial modules to onboard new users gently and inclusively.

Focused on open-source elements so the community can remix and build new practices.

Challenges we ran into

Striking the right balance between immersive visuals and non-distracting simplicity.

Designing for inclusivity across age, background, and tech familiarity.

Creating feedback that feels supportive but not clinical, respecting the line between wellness and medical advice.

Technical constraints in optimising VR worlds for smooth, lag-free group experiences.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building a VR-first mental wellness environment that feels safe, welcoming, and adaptable.

Developing remixable assets (breathing guides, meditation zones, calming soundscapes) for other creators.

Hosting our first live group session, where participants reported reduced stress in under 10 minutes.

What we learned

VR amplifies mindfulness — immersive presence makes practice more engaging than 2D apps.

Open-source remixing encourages creative collaboration, sparking ideas we didn’t anticipate.

Designing wellness spaces requires listening closely to diverse user needs and experiences.

What's next for Mindbreath VR

Expanding our library of breathing tools and community-driven tutorials.

Integrating biofeedback data (e.g. HRV, simple sensors) for deeper personalisation.

Partnering with schools, mental health groups, and community hubs for real-world impact.

Building a global open-source community of creators to shape the future of digital wellness.

Adding VR-based video modules for mindfulness and visualisation, enabling immersive guided journeys that combine soothing narration, interactive visuals, and calming environments.
