Our project was inspired by one of Abhishek’s patients, Gladys. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s one year ago, she had been doing pretty well living on her own. That is, until she developed a secondary condition – which is quite common among patients her age. In her case it was a urinary track infection that led to delirium. As a result, she had a serious fall and ended up in the hospital. ALthough she eventually returned home, she was never quite the same and needed additional supports. This is common among dementia patients, who are 4 to 5 times more likely to develop delirium and less likely to have it detected. This causes their functioning to rapidly decline, usually until something bad happens, at which point it’s often too late to reverse the effects. Quite often the patient never returns to their pre-illness level of functioning.

The good news is these rapid declines are often preventable if they’re detected early enough. Currently there is no outpatient solution for tracking the progress of dementia patients, so we created MindAbility to fill that gap. Our solution has two components, an app with fun games for the patient, and a data dashboard for doctors to monitor their progress. The games are based on clinically proven pen and paper assessment tools, and the scores are sent to the (caregiver or doctor’s) dashboard in real-time. MindAbility tracks three dimensions: memory, attention and visual spatial abilities.

We created an app for dementia patients and a data dashboard so doctors & caregivers can track the progression of dementia and predict problems before they occur. Our team consists of a front end developer, back end developer, a full-stack developer, a geriatrics doctor and a graphic designer/MBA student. We’ve created a financial model and business plan for going to market, which involves eventually targeting some of the 29,000+ long term care homes in Canada, the US and the UK. Our next step would be to validate and refine our platform locally in a clinical setting, ideally with the support of government grants.
