What it does

Mind Pawse is a wellbeing companion app that helps people, especially teens build a healthier relationship with social media. Instead of endless scrolling, it creates mindful pauses through short, low-effort prompts. These moments encourage awareness, reflection, and perspective without judgment.

How we built it

✨ Transparent Onboarding ✨

When the user first installs the app, they are shown how it works: Mind Pawse scans their screen only to detect appearance-focused patterns.

All data stays stored locally on their phone — ensuring privacy and building trust from the start.

Gentle, Timed Prompts During scrolling sessions, the app introduces short breaks through three types of prompts:

  • Critical Thinking Prompt

“What percentage of these posts do you think may be heavily edited?” → This feature encourages a more thoughtful, critical perspective on appearance content, helping users recognize image manipulation without shaming creators. It normalizes editing as a cultural practice while reducing the harm of passive consumption.

  • Mood Check-In

“How are you feeling after viewing this content?” → By connecting emotional state to what they’re consuming, users begin to see how social media impacts their mood in real time.

  • Reflection Prompt

“Looking back, how did you use Instagram today?” (with simple checkboxes) → Encourages users to step back and be mindful of their habits and intentions.

After each prompt, users are invited to take a 1-minute break — creating space for self-reflection and reinforcing that social media is not reality.

✨ Daily Recap & Community ✨

  • A personalized dashboard shows how Instagram use has affected their mood that day, and over time, users can track patterns.

  • A supportive community feed allows anonymous reflections, peer affirmations, and reminders that no one is alone in these experiences.

Challenges we ran into

  • Balancing gentle nudges with non-intrusiveness — we wanted prompts that support reflection without interrupting too much.

  • Designing transparency around data privacy so users feel safe and in control.

  • Simplifying UX so teens can engage effortlessly without it feeling like extra “homework.”

  • Creating language that is supportive and neutral, avoiding judgmental or prescriptive tones.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a concept that bridges wellbeing and technology in a practical, compassionate way.

  • Designing an onboarding process that emphasizes trust and transparency from the start.

  • Crafting prompts that balance critical thinking, emotional awareness, and personal reflection in a low-effort, relatable style.

  • Prototyping a clean and approachable design in Figma that aligns with our mission of calm, mindful engagement.

What we learned

  • Teens value subtle, positive reinforcement over heavy-handed advice.

  • Small, repeated pauses can reshape how people interact with social media over time.

  • Language choice matters — even one word can shift whether something feels supportive or judgmental.

What's next for Mind Pawse

  • Testing with real users to refine prompt timing and tone.

  • Expanding beyond Instagram to other platforms where appearance-focused content is prevalent.

  • Exploring integrations with wellbeing tools like journaling, breathing exercises, and gentle reminders.
