Inspiration
Our inspiration to build this project came from hearing stories about and seeing others struggling with their mental health. We wanted to make it easy for people to assess their own mental health at home, and try to give feedback that may be able to help them. Since we were all interested in learning more about HTML and creating websites, we wanted to combine these ideas and create a website that all people could use.
What it does
Our solution to the issue of deteriorating mental health and the difficulty in diagnosing it was creating a short quiz that can be taken by anyone. The quiz asks various questions relating to several different categories, including physical health, well-being, and emotional health. Each answer is assigned a point value (1 being the worst, and 5 being the best). Some questions also require follow up questions based on the user’s response. At the end of the quiz, the overall score is shown, and feedback relating to the user’s specific answers are given. In addition to a quiz, our website also uses AR to give information about different parts of the brain and their relation to mental health, making the website more interactive and fun to younger users.
How we built it
We built our website on Repl.it since it let us code collaboratively. Our website was coded in HTML, CSS to stylize the website, and JavaScript to create certain functions and power our buttons. We also used EchoAR for the AR section of our website. The 3D model in our EchoAR link was created using TinkerCAD to combine an open-source 3D model of a brain with information about different brain chemicals.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were personalizing the quiz portion of our website to give meaningful feedback for a user's and using EchoAR. It was our first time using EchoAR, but by accessing resources and guides online, we were able to successfully create an AR feature for our website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of the overall design and layout of our website, especially its unique features like our fixed tab list and different button hovering abilities. Since we were new to EchoAR, we are very proud of being able to incorporate that feature into our website, adding an educational but fun aspect. Finally, we are also proud of being able to personalize our quiz, so people who use our website can get supportive feedback that is meaningful to them.
What we learned
We learned how to use EchoAR throughout this process, while also reinforcing our knowledge on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We also learned about teamwork, like effectively and evenly dividing up work, and how trial and error can be tedious but still helpful.
What's next for Mind Check
In the future, we hope to provide a larger variety of questions, become more personalized by adding more clarification questions, create a way for users to make accounts and track their progress, give notifications or reminders for users to use every month, and create a feature for users to share feedback or their journey with mental health.
