Millennium Money Mentor

Is a retro-futuristic website with a Y2K aesthetic that serves as an interactive financial literacy platform. The website focuses on educating users about smart money management, with a particular emphasis on understanding and optimizing transactions in the digital age.

The events of the Millennium Bug, or the Y2K bug, inspired us to create this site. The Y2K bug, serves as a powerful reminder of how intertwined personal finance and technology have become. At the turn of the millennium, the world faced a potential digital disaster because many computer systems stored dates using only the last two digits of the year. As the clock struck midnight on January 1, 2000, there was widespread concern that systems might interpret the year 2000 as 1900, causing glitches in everything from financial institutions to power grids.

Through promoting financial literacy, the aftermath of an event such as the Millennium Bug is lessened in severity, as people become more educated on how inflation and interest have affected the digital world.

What does it do?

Key features of MMM:

  • Compares how $100, or any user entered value, in 2000 translates to today's value
  • Teaches about inflation and the importance of financial planning
  • Produces a news feed about recent financial events

How we built it

Using the languages of HTML, JavaScript, and CSS

Challenges we ran into

Integrating the JavaScript into the project

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to implement functionality into the site within 24 hours, design an interface consistent with the Y2K theme, and promote financial literacy with accurate inflation and interest rates.

What we learned

We learned a great deal about how dividing and conquering and yield bountiful results when you are combining front-end and back-end development. We also learned that even in a time constraint, a program is possible through teamwork and perseverance.

What's next for Millennium Money Mentor

We can expand on MMM, by adding more functionalities to the "Tools" section. We can also add more design to the page, as this is a simple retro design.
