Military Traveler aggregates data from hundreds of government websites and then redistributes it through an attractive, intuitive user interface on both iOS and Android devices. It makes official DoD travel significantly easier (arranging lodging, coordinating with units at other bases, and finding services when you get there). This app goes farther than simply providing phone numbers. It combines information already available with crowd sourced data providing the end user a rich experience where they can find addresses, URLs, email addresses, fax numbers, general information, photos, and reviews. It drastically improves the efficiency of the standard phone directory and makes information on the roughly 200 base websites across the four services standardized.
Compare the quality of information and the ease of mobile access on http://www.militaryinstallations.dod.mil with that of Military Traveler on an iPhone. Between the Home Base option which stores your most frequently used base information on your device (so you don’t have to wait for it to load), to the map feature that allows you to easy see all the military installations around you, to the fact that information is dynamically pulled from a database that is constantly being updated, this app allows greater access to the resources available to the two largest departments in the government (Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs).
http://www.MilitaryInstallations.dod.mil is not a site listed on the contest details page, but we feel that it fits with the spirit of this challenge. It utilizes data which is freely available on Federal government websites and presents it in a better format for entrepreneurs and government employees. This is a clean, fully-baked application that is receiving high ratings on the app store. We’re thrilled to accept this challenge from the SBA!
