Inspiration
Independent filmmakers and actors rarely get a fair shot: production is expensive, distribution is gatekept by studios and OTT platforms, and fans have no real way to back projects they love or see how their support translates into ownership. At the same time, short-form video has proven that audiences will watch bite-sized story content anywhere, anytime. We wanted to combine generative AI media tools with a crowdfunding and casting layer so that anyone with a story idea could produce a pilot, attract real actors and backers, and get discovered — all inside one platform, instead of stitching together five different tools.
What it does
MicroStudio lets a creator type a story concept and generate an AI-produced micro-drama pilot in minutes. Viewers scroll an endless, TikTok-style feed to discover these pilots, react, and follow creators. If a pilot resonates, backers can support it through a royalty-based crowdfunding UI that shows how funding converts into a stake in the project's future earnings. Creators can also post open casting positions, and real actors can browse a talent marketplace, apply, and — if a role fits — partner with the project for a royalty share instead of a flat fee. For any AI-generated scene that uses an actor's likeness or voice, the actor must explicitly opt in through a consent flag before generation is allowed, keeping the casting-preview feature ethical by design. Once a project is ready, MicroStudio's AI promo engine automatically cuts short trailers and reels from the full pilot for cross-platform promotion, and a premium OTT-style player lets fans watch the finished content in full.
How we built it
The platform is built around Backblaze B2 for storing and serving all generated video, audio, and image assets, paired with the Genblaze SDK to handle AI media generation for pilots, casting previews, and promotional trailers. On top of that we layered a discovery feed for short-form scrolling, a talent marketplace and casting board, a crowdfunding/royalty interface, and an OTT-style playback experience, all wired into the same B2-backed asset pipeline so generated media flows straight from creation to storage to playback without manual handling.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing generation speed with storage and retrieval performance was a constant tension, since every pilot, trailer, and casting preview needed to move from AI generation into B2 and back out to the feed with minimal delay. Designing the consent flow for AI-generated actor likenesses also took real care: we wanted casting previews to feel powerful without ever letting a project use someone's face or voice without their explicit sign-off. Getting bucket access and credentials configured correctly across local development and the deployed environment also took some back-and-forth.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of shipping a genuinely end-to-end pipeline — from AI pilot generation, to a working discovery feed, to a royalty crowdfunding UI, to a talent marketplace with ethical, consent-gated AI casting previews, to automated promo trailer generation and a polished OTT player — as a single cohesive product rather than a collection of disconnected demos.
What we learned
We learned how much product and ethical design matters as much as the underlying AI: generation is only useful if it's paired with fast, reliable storage, a real distribution path, and clear consent boundaries for the people whose likeness the AI is touching. We also came away with a much deeper understanding of structuring a B2-backed media pipeline for both local development and production.
What's next for MicroStudio – AI Micro-Dramas, Crowdfunding & OTT Publishing
Next, we want to move the crowdfunding and royalty layer from a UI concept into real, auditable payment and revenue-sharing logic, expand the casting marketplace with richer actor portfolios and verification, and open up direct publishing from MicroStudio to external platforms so creators can push finished pilots and promo reels straight to OTT partners and social platforms from one dashboard.
