MicroMentor
Inspiration
Finding the right person to answer a specific question can be surprisingly difficult. Traditional consulting often requires long sessions, high costs, and complicated arrangements, while many problems only need 15–30 minutes of focused expert guidance.
We built MicroMentor around a simple idea:
What if you could get the right expert for exactly the problem you have, without committing to a long consultation?
MicroMentor makes expert knowledge more accessible by connecting people with professionals for short, focused, affordable sessions.
What it does
MicroMentor is a two-sided expert consultation marketplace.
Customers can:
- Discover experts by category, skill, rating, price, and availability
- View detailed expert profiles and reviews
- Choose 15, 30, or 45-minute consultation sessions
- Select an available time slot
- Pay securely through Stripe
- Receive booking confirmations and meeting details
- Manage upcoming and previous consultations
- Leave reviews after completed sessions
Experts can:
- Create professional profiles
- Showcase their skills and experience
- Create different consultation session types
- Set their own prices
- Configure their availability and timezone
- Connect their Stripe account
- Receive and manage bookings
- Track earnings and payouts
- Receive booking notifications
MicroMentor operates as a marketplace and earns a configurable commission from successful consultations.
The core experience is:
Find → Book → Pay → Meet → Solve
How we built it
We designed MicroMentor as a modern full-stack marketplace application.
Technology Stack
- Next.js + React — frontend and application framework
- TypeScript — type-safe development
- Tailwind CSS — responsive UI
- PostgreSQL — application database
- Prisma — database ORM
- Clerk — authentication and user management
- Stripe Checkout — customer payments
- Stripe Connect — expert onboarding and payouts
- Stripe Webhooks — reliable payment/event processing
- Resend — transactional email
- Sentry — error monitoring
- PostHog — product analytics
- Vercel — deployment
We also used Stripe Projects to identify and provision the infrastructure services available through the projects.dev catalog.
The payment architecture uses Stripe Connect so that MicroMentor can operate as a marketplace while experts receive their share of consultation payments.
A typical payment flow is:
Customer → Stripe Checkout → Stripe Webhook → Booking Confirmation → Expert Payout
All payment confirmation is handled through verified Stripe webhook events rather than trusting the browser redirect.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing a reliable booking system.
Two customers could potentially try to book the same expert and time slot at exactly the same moment. We therefore needed server-side availability validation, database transactions, and protection against race conditions and double bookings.
Payments introduced another major challenge. A successful redirect to a checkout success page does not necessarily mean our application should immediately consider a booking paid. We had to design the system around Stripe webhooks and make webhook processing idempotent so duplicate events would not create duplicate bookings or notifications.
We also had to carefully separate customer and expert permissions, protect administrative functionality, and ensure that prices, booking information, and Stripe-related data could not be manipulated from the client.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of turning a simple idea into a complete marketplace architecture rather than just building a static prototype.
Some of the key accomplishments include:
- A complete customer-to-expert booking flow
- Expert profiles and discovery
- Configurable consultation sessions
- Availability and scheduling
- Secure Stripe Checkout integration
- Stripe Connect expert onboarding and payouts
- Platform commission support
- Webhook-based payment confirmation
- Double-booking protection
- Customer and expert dashboards
- Reviews and ratings
- Transactional notifications
- Admin management capabilities
- Authentication and role-based authorization
- Error monitoring and analytics
- A responsive experience across desktop and mobile
Most importantly, the product has a clear and simple value proposition:
Get the right answer from the right person in minutes.
What we learned
Building MicroMentor taught us that marketplace applications are much more complex than simply connecting two types of users.
The hardest parts are often behind the interface:
- Designing reliable booking transactions
- Handling payment states correctly
- Understanding marketplace payment flows
- Working with Stripe Connect
- Building idempotent webhooks
- Protecting against race conditions
- Designing secure role-based authorization
- Handling refunds and cancellations
- Managing timezones and availability
- Keeping financial calculations accurate
We also learned the importance of building the core user journey first and avoiding unnecessary complexity.
Instead of building our own video infrastructure, advanced AI matching, or complicated recommendation systems immediately, we focused on making the essential loop reliable:
Find an expert → book a time → pay → meet → review.
What's next for MicroMentor
The next stage is to make MicroMentor smarter and more personalized.
AI-powered expert matching
Users could describe their problem in natural language, and MicroMentor could recommend the most relevant experts.
For example:
"I have a product manager interview next week and need someone to review my answers."
The system could identify relevant skills and recommend suitable mentors.
AI session preparation
Before a consultation, AI could generate:
- A concise problem summary
- Suggested questions
- A proposed session agenda
- Preparation materials
Calendar integrations
We plan to integrate:
- Google Calendar
- Microsoft Outlook
- Google Meet
- Zoom
This would make scheduling and meeting management seamless.
Expert subscriptions
Experts could eventually access premium tools through monthly plans, including:
- Advanced analytics
- Profile promotion
- AI-assisted session preparation
- Customer insights
- Advanced scheduling
Mobile applications
Once the web marketplace is established, we can extend MicroMentor to iOS and Android.
Global marketplace
Longer term, we want to support more countries, currencies, languages, and localized payment experiences.
Our ultimate goal is to make expert knowledge as easy to access as booking a short appointment—turning thousands of small questions into meaningful connections between people who need help and people who know how to help.
