Inspiration
Reddit is full of daily moments where a community suddenly explodes around a topic — a post goes viral, comments spiral, or nostalgia hits all at once.
The inspiration for Micro-Karma came from noticing that these moments are inherently social, but they disappear quickly.
I wanted to turn this behavior into a daily game-like experience that doesn’t rely on winning or scoring, but instead encourages discussion and reflection.
What it does
Micro-Karma is a daily social game that generates a “snapshot of the day” for a subreddit.
Each snapshot:
- Represents how a subreddit behaved that day
- Encourages players to discuss why the community reacted that way
- Is designed to be quick, lightweight, and repeatable daily
The comments are intentionally part of the gameplay.
How I built it
This project was built as a working prototype using simple web technologies (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) to focus on the core interaction:
- A clear daily mechanic
- A fast, mobile-friendly experience
- A strong discussion prompt
For this hackathon demo, the snapshot content is generated deterministically to simulate daily variation.
In a full version, this logic would be replaced with live Reddit data using Reddit’s Devvit platform and Interactive Posts.
Challenges & learnings
The biggest challenge was scoping the project to something that could be built and demonstrated quickly, while still feeling meaningful and Reddit-native.
This project reinforced that:
- Daily mechanics don’t need complexity
- Social interaction can be the core gameplay
- Clear UX and framing matter more than technical scale
What’s next
Future improvements include:
- Live subreddit data via Devvit
- True daily locking of snapshots
- Deeper integration with comments and user participation
- Visual polish and mobile-first refinements
