Inspiration
First-world countries' colossal carbon footprint inflicts lasting harm on developing nations, exacerbating inequality and environmental degradation. The excessive emissions resulting from their lifestyles and industries contribute to climate change, leading to devastating consequences for vulnerable regions. This stark disparity perpetuates an unjust cycle, impeding the progress and well-being of those striving to overcome poverty and achieve sustainable development. Experiencing this first hand fueled our desire to make an application that helps people better understand their impact on the world.
What it does
CarboNinja is a carbon footprint calculator that allows users to input their transportation, energy usage, diet, and waste management information. It then calculates their carbon footprint and provides suggestions on how they can reduce it. The tool aims to raise awareness about individual impact on the environment and encourage sustainable lifestyle choices.
How we built it
We built CarboNinja using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We created the user interface with HTML and styled it with CSS to make it visually appealing. JavaScript was used to handle form submissions, perform the carbon footprint calculations, and display the results and suggestions dynamically.
Challenges we ran into
As beginner coders and Jamhacks being our first hackathon, we faced several challenges during the development process. Understanding and implementing the calculations for the carbon footprint was a complex task. Additionally, we had to ensure that the user interface was user-friendly and intuitive. Debugging the code and resolving errors also proved to be a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of completing our first hackathon project and creating a functional carbon footprint calculator. Despite being new to coding, we were able to overcome challenges and develop a working tool. We are also proud of the design and layout of the website, which we believe enhances the user experience.
What we learned
Throughout the development of CarboNinja we learned a great deal about web development, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We gained experience in handling form submissions, manipulating DOM elements, and performing calculations. We also improved our problem-solving skills and learned how to work effectively as a team.
What's next
Building on our current success of creating a functional carbon footprint calculator, we aim to introduce gamified elements such as challenges, achievements, and rewards to make the calculator more engaging and enjoyable. By incorporating these elements, we hope to motivate users to actively track and reduce their carbon footprint, turning sustainable living into a fun and interactive experience. Our goal is to create a platform that not only educates users about their environmental impact but also empowers them to make positive changes in their daily lives. With this next step, we strive to inspire a wider audience to join the movement towards a more sustainable future.
