Inspiration

I have a minor in Biomedical Engineering, and recently we've been learning about the downsides to the healthcare system in North America. In North America, we focus on acute care rather than primary care. This means hospitals are used more than family clinics, but by then it's normally too late.

Thus, my goal was to build an app that allowed you to message and ask others online for help when it's inconvenient to go to the doctors, or when they're too far away!

What it does

Using a Google account to login, you can navigate to one of the chats and ask your pending medical question. Alternatively, you can also visit the chats to give advice!

How we built it

The app was built using NextJS for the back-end, along side various Firebase SDKs to utilize Firebase Auth and Firebase Firestore Database. Finally, the app was deployed using Vercel.

Challenges we ran into

This was the first time I worked with NextJS/React, so the learning curve was quite steep. In general, I found the research for this project to be quite challenging. For example, many functions didn't have clear documentation on return values, thus slowing down my progress. Lastly, time constraints from commitments outside of the hackathon definitely added additional stress.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud on the amount we've learned in such a small period of time.

What's next for MIC Messenger

Given our time constraints, we were not able to finalize our vision for the project. Ideally, the app should allow for users to create their own chats, for users to verify themselves as healthcare providers, to utilize a translate API like yandex and so much more!
