Inspiration

Our Inspiration for this project was the bay here at FIU. Miami Wave as a platform is inspired by the work by climate activists and researchers at Florida International University and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

What it does

Our goal is to inform and educate people to raise awareness regarding what is going on in Miami-Dade County. Miami faces a number of sea level rise risks, including increased urban flooding, increased saltwater intrusion and contamination of drinking water supplies, and flooding of power plant substations and ensuing power outages. Reports on climate change often cause anxiety and a sense of helplessness to people. We put together Miami Wave to provide people with a starting point for climate action through education and resources.

Miami Wave provides a breakdown of the current status of Miami as it pertains to rising sea levels triggered by climate change, highlighting the potential disasters beyond the current damages caused by flooding, and explaining what is exactly causing sea level rise.

How we built it

We built this beautiful website using Wix and some small amount of javascript Wix is an all in one platform so all the tools we needed Wix provides in it's built-in database. Graphics, such as the maps on the pages, were developed using tools by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges we ran into were working as a team and making changes. We were not able to make changes at once and we ran into some UI challenges. Our biggest challenge was working on a web-based developer with limited internet.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud as a team to create something that we are truly passionate about and that is the environment and informing people about what is going on in the community.

What we learned

During this Shellhack we learned news tools and what goes on when creating frontend work

What's next for Miami Wave

We hope to create a more robust informational system that can be accessed on multiple platforms and provide people with even more resources. Additionally, we would like to expand our scope from only Miami to other cities and regions that will face the brunt of rising sea levels.
