For the hackathon, we were given the prompt, "The Future of Miami Tech". With that prompt, we wanted to design something that would give back to the community. We also understood that this is a hackathon with strong emphasis on web3 technologies, so we wanted to use some of that in our project.
What it does
It is an app that offers scholarship opportunities/resources/rewards for students who complete community service. We chose a student only web app to keep it safe for the students that use it. It uses the 311 database to create a student initiative in community clean up. They can redeem rewards by redeeming the crypto(MDC coin) they receive for each project. All credentials go through and are certified on the blockchain.
How we built it
We designed the front-end in Figma and implemented it in React We created and executed a smart contract to create a token on the Polygon testnet. We built a Django application to handle the backend, and a Wordpress site to serve as the homepage.
Challenges we ran into
Our primary challenge was time. While this was a week-long hackathon, we didn't have too much time in practice because of us having schoolwork and work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we worked together quite well.
What we learned
We learned how to create a token on a blockchain. We also got to practice frontend and backend development.
What's next for Miami Dade College DAO
We plan on continuing development to fully realize the vision we have of the application. We also plan on establishing partnerships with various entities to create an ecosystem for redeeming the earned crypto tokens.
