Ever spent hours studying a PDF, only to wonder, “Wait… do I actually understand any of this?”

We've all been there. Endless notes, repetitive rereading, and the constant struggle to figure out what we've learned and what we still need to work on.

We built Mi(a) AI to make that experience better. We wanted something beyond another AI chatbot that simply answers questions. We imagined a Study Buddy that could work with your own course material, help you test yourself, show you where its answers came from, and help you understand your learning progress.

The idea was simple: turn studying from a passive activity into an interactive experience.

What makes Mi(a) AI different?

Most AI tools focus on giving you an answer. Mi(a) AI brings together learning from your own notes, checking the sources behind answers, testing your understanding, and tracking your progress in one place.

It doesn't just help you get through your study material faster. It gives you more ways to engage with it, challenge yourself, and discover which topics deserve another look.

How we built it 🛠️

Mi(a) AI combines a modern web interface with a Python-powered backend to bring its study tools together.

• Frontend: React, Vite, and Tailwind CSS for a responsive, interactive dashboard.
• Backend: Python and FastAPI for handling requests and connecting the learning features.
• Document processing: PDF text extraction with page-level references to make study content searchable.
• AI-powered learning: Question answering grounded in uploaded material, topic-based quiz generation, and answer explanations.
• Learning insights: Topic-level mastery estimates and quiz scoring to help students understand their progress.
• Study resources: Searchable source passages and downloadable chat and quiz reports.

The focus was to make these features work together as a single learning experience instead of leaving students to switch between multiple tools.

Challenges we ran into 🧩

Building an AI study tool comes with a challenge that goes beyond generating good-looking answers: making those answers useful, relevant, and verifiable.

We had to bring document processing, AI responses, source references, quizzes, scoring, and learning analytics together in one workflow. Connecting the frontend and backend while keeping the experience smooth also required careful integration and testing.

Another challenge was making learning progress meaningful. A quiz score can tell you how you performed on one attempt, but it doesn't automatically tell you how well you've mastered an entire topic. That's why mastery is presented as an estimate rather than an absolute measure of understanding.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆

We're proud to have brought together the core pieces of a more interactive study experience in Mi(a) AI.

From turning PDFs into searchable learning resources to generating quizzes, reviewing answers, exploring source passages, and exporting study reports, the project aims to make everyday studying more organised and engaging.

We're particularly proud of combining source transparency with self-assessment. Students can explore where an answer came from and then test how well they've understood the material — connecting information, practice, and reflection in one place.

And, of course, we're proud to give all of this a personality: a Study Buddy named Mi(a) AI.

What we learned 🧠

We learned that building an AI-powered learning product involves much more than connecting a model to a chat box.

Document quality and context matter. Answers need to be grounded in relevant information. Quiz generation needs to be useful for practice, not just produce questions. Progress indicators need to communicate what they actually measure. And a good interface can make complex technology feel approachable.

Most importantly, we learned that AI in education should do more than make answers easier to access. It should help students engage with information, question their understanding, and take ownership of how they learn.

What's next for Mi(a) AI 🔮

We want Mi(a) AI to become an even more personalised learning companion.

Future improvements could include adaptive revision plans based on quiz performance, smarter practice recommendations for weak topics, support for presentations and video transcripts, and richer ways to learn from diagrams and other visual material.

The bigger vision is to help students spend less time wondering what to study next and more time actually understanding it.
