Inspiration
A way to expand our programming skillset.
How it helps society
A solution to a common issue: getting lost Everyone has gotten lost or will get lost somehow, whether it be in a mall or in the woods Through this app: You will be able to save the location that you started out from with just a single press of a button You will be able to see a route back to your saved location from your current location You can save your location to a Internet-connected database server, along with the other users of this app You will be able to see where other people are and how you can get to them Will be wildly helpful if you are separated from a group or if you are trying to find another person How it will help society: Far less people will have to endure the worries and struggles of being lost, alone in an unfamiliar location It will enable others to be able to locate and know the whereabouts of one another, potentially saving valuable time and even lives
What it does
When you first open the app, you are greeted with: The “Current Location” overlay containing Your current address Your current latitude and longitude A button that will save your current location The “Remembered Location” overlay containing Your saved address Your saved latitude and longitude A button that will show you the route to get from your current location to your saved location A “Show Everyone” button that will display the locations of every user using the app (currently experimental) The current location updates when you move Upon clicking the button, the app will pull up a google maps that will direct you to your saved location The multiple-user feature also redirects you to a google maps, but with the locations of the users marked in addition to yours The multiple-user feature is currently only experimental due to technical issues (not enough working android phones)
How we built it
It was created using MIT App Inventor 2 and through the joint efforts of Donovan Zhang, Kevin Sun, Annie Yu, & Katie Whatley
Challenges we ran into
Technical difficulties and map and dictionary issues
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We had great team chemistry, and we were able to come up with an idea quickly
What we learned
MIT app inventor 2 can create any type of app
What's next for MetroHacks Hackathon Submission
For future applications we hope to: Fully test and finalize the code for the multiple-user function, and Use this concept to tackle similar problems in different fields
