NextMission Navigator - AI Powered Life Planning for Veterans

Inspiration

At seventeen I thought I had my future mapped out. I enlisted in the military ready to serve and ready to build a career for myself. Just eight months later, at eighteen years old, I was discharged for medical reasons. With no parents to guide me, no mentors, and no understanding of what resources even existed, I was left to figure it out alone.

That lack of support at such a critical turning point sent me down a difficult road filled with uncertainty and hardship. It took me years to rebuild my path, but I never stopped trying. I focused on raising my family, then returned to school to complete my degrees in technology management and in management and organizational leadership. I earned certifications in AI and blockchain, and built a new future in technology by combining personal resilience with the right opportunities.

During that time, I watched my husband, a respected Army veteran, go through his own transition after serving 24 years. His leadership skills, determination, and ability to seek information helped him navigate the process successfully. But even for someone with decades of experience, retirement benefits, and a proactive approach, the transition came with challenges.

His success was not the result of clear support from the military system. It happened because he actively sought answers, leveraged his network, and worked side by side with me to navigate the confusing processes that so many veterans face. His story showed me that most veterans are still left without accessible tools or reliable guidance to help them plan their next chapter. That is where NextMission Navigator comes in.

What it does

NextMission Navigator is an AI powered life planning assistant designed for veterans, transitioning service members, and their families. It helps users:

  • Find reliable, up to date resources for housing, mental health, education, career training, and financial assistance
  • Access personalized action plans based on their location, goals, and circumstances
  • Receive real time, AI sourced information backed by citations to reduce misinformation and outdated links
  • Navigate complex processes like disability claims, VA education programs, and career pivots with more confidence

NextMission Navigator simplifies the search for support, turning overwhelming tasks into clear, guided next steps.

How I built it

I created NextMission Navigator as a solo project during the Bolt New Hackathon. Using Bolt New, AI APIs, and modern development tools, I built:

  • A clean, user friendly web interface focused on reducing confusion and frustration
  • AI powered resource recommendations verified through real time web data with trusted citations
  • Conversational AI functionality powered by the Claude API to provide clear, intelligent responses
  • ElevenLabs voice generation to lay the foundation for future accessibility and audio features
  • A scalable platform designed to evolve with new features and deeper AI integrations

This is my first end to end AI product built independently. I developed it while managing full time work, family life, and ongoing professional development in technology and AI.

Challenges I ran into

Building a complex resource tool alone while balancing daily responsibilities pushed me to grow in new ways. AI integration, ensuring real time accuracy, and keeping the system simple yet effective took trial and adjustment.

At the same time, I was also co leading a team project for the hackathon while developing this solo project. Managing both builds simultaneously meant splitting time, problem solving across different product needs, and staying organized under pressure.

It was also important to create a solution that stayed focused on veterans without overlapping with other community projects I am developing. Throughout those challenges, I stayed focused on building a real, meaningful tool that can help others find the support I spent years searching for.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

  • I designed, built, and deployed this AI product entirely on my own
  • I created a solution that reflects my own journey and meets real needs for the veteran community
  • I combined technical expertise with firsthand knowledge of the military transition process
  • I proved that with persistence, anyone can pivot into AI and use technology to create lasting change

What I learned

Building NextMission Navigator showed me that technology, when combined with life experience, can solve real problems. I saw the gaps veterans face in accessing resources. I also saw how AI, designed with care and intention, can close those gaps.

Technically I gained deeper skills in AI development, data integration, and product design. Personally I proved that you can face setbacks, grow from them, and still build something that changes lives.

What is next for NextMission Navigator

NextMission Navigator is only getting started. The next phase will include:

  • Expanding the AI system to offer even more personalized resource pathways
  • Partnering with veteran organizations to increase reach and accessibility
  • Adding features to support life planning beyond resources, including education guidance, career tools, and goal setting
  • Seeking funding, partnerships, and grants to grow the platform and increase its impact

My mission is to ensure every veteran and their family has the tools, information, and confidence to plan their next mission with clarity and purpose. With AI as their co-pilot, they can navigate the future with the same strength and determination they brought to their service.
