Inspiration
Before doing this project, we were working on a donations payment system using Solana called "buy me a pizza", Solana started having more metaverses getting mint on their chain and was more affordable than the ones in Ethereum (currently over 6k USD in Ethereum) we decided to buy a piece of land, Michael has a degree in architecture and has worked with 3D rendering before and wanted to build something in the metaverse.
While doing so the experience was more than frustrating, there were no pictures of what the land looked like, no interactive map, or anything to see exactly how choosing this land over the other would benefit him in the future. You had to go back n forth between the marketplace and the official metaverse page to compare the coordinates of one map with the current listings available. Besides that, there are many scams happening in crypto and there was no information available about the founding team or who was behind it.
The user experience was just not right, there were features missing for it to be a real estate marketplace, we could see the potential a marketplace like this would have in the space, so we decided to get build it.
Both of us are enthusiastic about web3 and crypto, so this came naturally at the end of the day.
What it does
We are building a marketplace of metaverses for people to trade their NFTs, currently, the way metaverse projects are selling their NFTs (either land or apartments in the metaverse) is by using the pfp (profile picture) NFTs marketplaces like OpenSea, Rarible, and others, while this approach works, the user experience is not the ideal for this niche.
We think that buying land or apartment in the metaverse should be as pleasant as buying land or apartment in real life, where users can see photos of the place, what other amenities it has to offer and the possibilities in regards to building in that plot (amount of voxels, height, width, deep of the land) or how many furniture NFTs can you add to your apartment, from which blockchains, etc.
In the future, we would like to have a way for creators to offer their services as architects, interior designers, or furniture designers for any person or company wanting to build in the metaverse.
How we built it
We started Metahub in late May, we built a landing page with a list of metaverses and created the Twitter page to begin making an audience for our marketplace.
Right now we are working on the MVP using next.js and supabase DB along with the phantom wallet integration for solana, this update will let users see the listings of the different metaverses and their prices.
Challenges we ran into
It's a new space so a lot has to be rebuilt, which is also exciting.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
People seem to like what we are building and we have been in talks with strong communities on the metaverse NFT ecosystem.
What we learned
PFP (profile picture) NFTs are the standard nowadays, but for metaverse NFTs some things need to be thought again, for instance, a dynamic NFT would make more sense, as the appearance of the buildings change from one user to another while the land remains the same, that is something that doesn't happen in regular NFTs.
We also found out that people are already finding ways to sell their metaverse lands in different ways than the traditional marketplaces, for instance, there are realtor websites in the space, and the demand for architects in this space is increasing every day.
What's next for METAHUB
Continue building our MVP and getting people to discover new metaverses through our platform, while also increasing the amount of builders in our platform (architects, interior designers, furniture designers, etc).
We think this will help onboard architects, furniture designers and more to the NFT ecosystem, same as PFP NFTs did with artists.
Moreover, we think this would also increase the interest in dynamic metaverse NFTs as explained before, each plot may look the same but whats on it or where its located it's what matters the most.
