Inspiration
The inspiration behind Metacraft Obby came from my love for both creative sandbox games and fast-paced obstacle challenges. I wanted to blend the nostalgic, blocky aesthetic of classic pixel worlds with the high-energy excitement of an Obby course. Horizon Worlds gave me the tools to bring that vision to life—where every jump, fall, and climb is part of an adventure. My goal was to create a space that sparks fun, competition, and creativity all at once.
What it does
Metacraft Obby is a fast-paced obstacle course game set in a vibrant, blocky world inspired by classic sandbox adventures. Players spawn at the starting point and must navigate a series of increasingly difficult parkour-style challenges—jumping over gaps, dodging traps, and climbing moving platforms.
The goal is to reach the finish line as quickly as possible without falling. If a player misses a jump or hits a hazard, they respawn at the last checkpoint. Time, accuracy, and strategy are key to mastering each level. Some stages also include secret shortcuts or hidden paths for skilled players to discover.
Whether you're competing against friends or racing the clock, Metacraft Obby offers a fun, skill-based experience that rewards precision and persistence.
How we built it
Building Metacraft Obby was a creative process that combined the power of the Horizon Worlds Desktop Editor with the versatility of Blender.
Using the Horizon Worlds Desktop Editor, I designed the core game play mechanics—such as player movement, checkpoints and obstacle triggers. The editor's scripting tools allowed me to create interactive elements like moving platforms, disappearing blocks, and reset points that made the Obby dynamic and engaging.
For the visual style, I used Blender to model custom low-poly, block-style assets that match the nostalgic "pixel" aesthetic of classic sandbox games. These assets were carefully optimized for performance and imported into Horizon Worlds, where I placed and scaled them to fit the obstacle layouts.
By combining these tools, I was able to build a unique, fun, and immersive Obby experience that balances artistic style with fast-paced game play.
Challenges we ran into
Creating Metacraft Obby came with its share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was optimizing performance. Since I used custom block-style assets designed in Blender, I had to carefully manage polygon count and texture size to ensure smooth game play in Horizon Worlds without lag or crashes.
Another challenge was fine-tuning the difficulty of the Obby. It was important to strike a balance between fun and frustration—making the course challenging enough to be engaging, but not so hard that players gave up. This required constant play testing and feedback from the community.
Scripting dynamic elements like moving platforms and checkpoints also took time. Ensuring all scripts triggered properly and didn’t conflict with one another pushed me to improve my logic and debugging skills.
Lastly, aligning the art style between Blender models and Horizon’s native assets was a creative challenge. I wanted a seamless visual experience, so I spent extra time adjusting lighting, colors, and scale to make everything feel cohesive.
Despite these obstacles, overcoming them made the final experience more rewarding and helped me grow as a creator.

What we learned
The Importance of Optimization: Creating detailed, immersive environments is exciting, but optimizing assets and scripts is essential for smooth performance, especially in multiplayer environments.
Balancing Difficulty Matters: Designing an Obby that’s fun, fair, and challenging taught us how small tweaks in obstacle placement or timing can greatly affect player experience and retention.
User Feedback is Invaluable: Player feedback helped us refine the game, fix bugs, and improve level flow. It reminded us that iteration is key to a successful experience.
Blender & Horizon Integration: We deepened our understanding of how to model in Blender for Horizon Worlds—learning about proper scale, file formatting, and how to make assets visually cohesive.
