Inspiration & Gameplay
MetaBonk is a survival game developed for Horizon Worlds, inspired by the addictive loop of Vampire Survivors. It combines easy-to-pickup mechanics with challenging depth. Players survive against waves of increasingly strong monsters using auto-firing abilities. The core engagement drives players to collect experience from fallen enemies to level up, allowing them to draft personalized builds via upgrades to damage, speed, and new skills. The current goal is to survive as long as possible while managing an evolving power curve.
How It Was Built
As a first-time Horizon Worlds project built during a competition, development required quickly adapting to the platform's documentation and TypeScript. Key technical implementations included:
Custom Projectile System: Simulating physics and collisions manually to allow for complex effects beyond the standard Projectile Launcher.
NPC Management: Utilizing Horizon’s NPC agents for spawning and behavior, paired with imported animated meshes for visual variety.
Upgrade Logic: A robust stats system linked to a Custom UI, using event broadcasting to handle real-time player progression.
Challenges & Future Roadmap
The main challenge was navigating the complexity limits of Horizon Worlds compared to traditional engines like Unreal. Despite these constraints, the project established a scalable foundation. Future updates will introduce multiplayer-specific mechanics, boss battles, distinct biomes, and persistent progression (gold collection to unlock characters), ensuring the game offers endless content and high retention.
