Inspiration

The idea for Meta Museum came about from our love for art and wanting to make the typical museum experience more accessible, interactive, and collaborative.

What it does

This Meta Horizon World allows users to walk around a museum and interact with the artwork in different ways.

How we built it

This project was built using the Meta Horizon World Editor, with scripting done in Typescript and 3D asset design done in Blender. We gathered artworks, such as paintings, sculptures, digital art, and began to think of ways we could make the standard museum experience more interactive and collaborative.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into some issues getting access to the Meta Horizon World Editor the first day of this event, so this slightly delayed our progress. When creating our NPCs we had some issues when getting the NPC to assign and follow one player at a time, however, we were able to solve the issue. However, we found due to the platform we can only have this function work for 3 NPCs for 3 players before the system overloads. We also faced challenges with working within our World, where some things will behave differently when tested on a primitive objects versus in our modded assets. In the end, all of the challenges we faced within the past three days have taught us a lot about development in Meta Horizon Worlds and made us better prepared for future projects.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating this project in something that was completely new to most of us. Thanks to the ease of use of Meta Horizon Worlds and its similarities to other editors, it was fairly easy to get used to and create the experiences we wanted to create.

What we learned

We learned a variety of different things throughout Reality Hacks while working on this project. The main takeaway was probably the endless possibilities that building worlds in Meta Horizon provides, and how it provides a beginner-friendly way to get started with creating multiplayer experiences in VR.

What's next for Meta Museum

We plan on continuing to add artworks and expanding the interactions that users can have with them. One feature that we wanted to implement, but couldn't due to time constraints, was a way for the NPCs to guide you throughout the museum, give you fun facts about the pieces, and provide tasks to complete around the museum. We have a lot of ideas, and we are excited to continue to make Meta Museum an enjoyable experience!
