Inspiration

Meta Mechanics is driven by my fascination with how cars work. Even without hands-on experience, I’ve always enjoyed learning about car parts and repairs. I built this game in Horizon to let players feel the joy of fixing and comparing cars in a fun, accessible way.

What it does

This mobile-focused game allows players to repair cars by selecting broken parts, using the correct machines to fix them, and reinstalling them to complete repairs. Players earn rewards after submitting the fixed cars through the main display.

How We Built It

We started by conceptualizing the game using primitive shapes and writing a plan to outline the core mechanics. Then, we used Blender to model the main area and sculpted sci-fi-style cars to create a futuristic look. We also developed the machines and repair systems using TypeScript to deliver engaging and interactive gameplay.

Challenges We Ran Into

It took several iterations to develop a working plan for how the code would handle the various mechanics in the game. With a lot of custom UI, events, persistent variables, and animations, the codebase grew quickly and had to be optimized for better manageability. Additionally, modeling the sci-fi-style cars was challenging due to their unique and irregular shapes, which required extra attention and creativity.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We’re proud of the game’s functionality and how it provides an engaging experience with car repairs. The balance of modeling and coding allowed us to build a realistic and enjoyable game environment. It’s rewarding to see how our hard work paid off and how players can enjoy the mechanics we’ve created.

What We Learned

Bringing this game to life gave us many opportunities to strengthen our persistence and patience throughout development. Constant iteration helped us sharpen our modeling and scripting skills, allowing us to reach a new level of efficiency and creativity. It was a rewarding experience that pushed us to grow as developers.

What's Next for Meta Mechanic?

Our original plan includes several additional mechanics that will enhance the game further. Future updates will allow players to choose whether to keep, sell, or trade the cars they repair. We also plan to introduce time-based challenges to add excitement and keep players engaged.
