Do you ever open a dictionary to look up words? Of course not. A savvy millennial like yourself care not to such devices. Meet Merriam-Scuffster, the only dictionary you didn't know you needed.

Inspiration

We looked up what scuffed meant. It didn't make sense. We wanted to make an app that doesn't make sense.

What it does

The Merriam-Scuffster dictionary searches actual dictionary definitions from the Merriam-Webster and passed each word through Thesaurus to provide you with a rich and somewhat confusing definition.

How we built it

We used android studio to build a Java application that scrapes the Merriam-Webster dictionary, scrapes Thesaurus, and outputs a scuffed definition to our application.

Challenges we ran into

  • Not all API are made equal
  • Scrapping the web for synonyms
  • Painful loading time when we call API a hundred times

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • The most scuffed dictionary out there
  • Had a blast making a fun project
  • Test the limits of our patience
