Inspiration :- As students at ASU, we wanted to build something that solves the everyday chaos of switching between Canvas, Calendar, Drive, mail, and tasks. That’s why we created Meridian, one AI assistant for the entire academic workflow.
What it does :- It is a multi-agent, multi mcp orchesterated system which helps students connect Canvas LMS and Google Workspace into one assistant, so students can access assignments, grades, files, schedules, and communication in one place. It turns fragmented tools into one unified academic experience.
How we built it :- We built Meridian with a Next.js frontend, a FastAPI gateway, and two MCP servers one for Canvas and one for Google Workspace. This lets the assistant route questions to the right tools and return one combined answer.
Challenges we ran into :- One major challenge was integrating multiple systems with different APIs, auth flows, and tool structures into one smooth experience. We also had to design the architecture so it stays scalable for future features like voice and write actions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of :- We’re proud that Meridian is more than a chatbot; it is a working multi-agent orchesterator and system academic assistant with real Canvas and Google integrations. We also built it in a modular way, which makes it easy to expand.
What we learned :- We learned how to build a full-stack AI system that connects real tools and services into one workflow. We also learned that solving a real user problem matters more than just adding more features.
What's next for Meridian :- Next, we want to add a voice agent, smoother approval-based actions, and workflows like finding a file in Drive and submitting it directly to Canvas. Our goal is to make Meridian feel like a true everyday student assistant.
