Inspiration

Meowdy! That's the name of this western-style cat-based RPG. You play as Claws Eastwood as you try to escape your backwater country hometown and find your fortune out West. Do odd-jobs and favours around town to earn money, you'll need it to pay for a ride outta here!

Direct inspiration came from a set of western RPG games already existing, we looked into those which we love and added our own little twist - cats.

How we built it

This game was built by three people in 24 hours as part of the 2022 Wackathon. Two of the three writers had no previous experience in Rust.

This game uses the Rust game engine "Bevy", and illustrates that not all games have to be written in more traditional languages (like C++ or C#). Rust is a new and emerging language with a great community and a focus on safety, speed and ease of use.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge we ran into was dealing directly with rust as a whole, not as a first language but first-hand experience with it for 2 of our team members. Furthermore, the game engine and environment we used - bevy - has very limited literature available for it as has only been released less than a year ago.

What's next for Meowdy!

Meowdy!'s future looks promising as the trio who worked on it plan on taking the project further, hopefully to a steam-worthy level of a game. More precisely, further game and character interactions, possible actions, assets and asset-player interactions.
