Inspiration
We all get distracted easily while studying, so we came up with an idea to help us stay on track. I have a cat at home, and I miss her when I’m studying at school. Sometimes, we unconsciously open Instagram or Reddit, but Meowcaroni is a cute and friendly reminder to stay focused! 🐱✨
What It Does
Meowcaroni is a Chrome extension designed to keep you on track while studying. • A cute animated cat walks back and forth on your screen when you’re inactive. • If you open a distracting website (like Instagram or Reddit), Meowcaroni closes it automatically. • If you stay inactive for too long, Meowcaroni starts meowing (Billie’s “meow meow” 🐱🎶) to remind you to focus.
How We Built It
We used: • HTML, CSS, JavaScript for the Chrome extension • Indomie chips for brain fuel 🍜
Challenges We Ran Into
This was our first time building a Chrome extension! Google’s documentation was super helpful, but understanding how Chrome handles permissions and background scripts took some time.
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
• Meowcaroni actually appears on the screen! (This felt like a huge win!)
• We figured out how to automatically close distracting tabs
• We got the meowing sound to trigger when inactive
What We Learned
• Google Docs permissions are tricky! We originally wanted Meowcaroni to “accidentally” erase work in Google Docs if you were slacking off, but we ran into permission restrictions.
• YouTube tutorials are lifesavers! 😆
What’s Next for Meowcaroni?
🐾 More customization options – users can add their own blocked websites 🐾 Different meow sounds based on inactivity time 🐾 Maybe… a reward system? (The cat gets happier the longer you focus!)
