Inspiration
With food being the largest contributor to each household’s carbon footprint annually, we thought it would be impactful to aid in food consumption and waste management. Additionally, solutions towards shortening the food transportation process and reducing individual food carbon footprints would most definitely contribute greatly to taking another step into our sustainable future.
What it does
Enables the user to create food logs that track their regular consumption and wastage rates. Over time, the app keeps track of the average wastage rates so the user can focus on cutting down on unnecessary food.
Food Waste Management: Provides a platform and library for published articles surrounding food waste utilities to promote creative and fun solutions to this problem. Includes a FarmerFinder to map out collection points or farms for users to exchange for farm goods (e.g. free range eggs/vegetable seeds) for their food waste (e.g. banana peels). This overall reduces food ‘waste’ and encourages sustainable recycling of resources, whilst circulating enforcement into sustainable food production.
How we built it
Usage of html and bootstrap templates, allowed us to model our initial ideas and develop these through online resources.
Challenges we ran into
Manipulating structure and formatting of our webapp using HTML and bootstrap, GitHub collaboration and syncing proved some challenges we managed to overcome.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Working as a team to build our ideas theoretically and practically, we achieved an interactive design model for our ideas, with the basic features implemented. We got it in the end :)
What we learned
Team collaboration across multiple platforms for example GitHub and for some we learnt how to implement bootstrap and work HTML.
What's next for Menumein
To improve user experience, the incorporation of machine learning would be beneficial in identifying specific habits the user expresses to further tailor a more personal experience for them. E.g. Suggested articles based around log data
