Inspiration

Mental health in the workplace has become a silent crisis. We witnessed colleagues struggling in isolation, afraid to speak up about burnout, anxiety, and stress due to fear of judgment or career impact. With 76% of employees reporting feeling burned out and most companies lacking effective tools to identify mental health issues proactively, we realized traditional HR approaches weren't enough. We envisioned an AI-powered platform that could bridge this gap - creating safe, confidential spaces for honest communication while giving HR leaders actionable insights to build healthier, more productive workplaces.

What it does

Mentra is an AI-powered workplace mental health platform that revolutionizes how organizations support employee wellbeing. The platform offers:

How we built it

We architected Mentra as a modern, scalable web application using cutting-edge technologies:

Frontend: Built with React 18 and TypeScript for type safety, styled with Tailwind CSS for responsive design, and enhanced with Framer Motion for calming animations that reduce user anxiety.

AI Integration: Integrated OpenAI GPT-4 for intelligent conversation analysis and ElevenLabs for natural voice interactions, creating empathetic AI that feels human and supportive.

Backend: Leveraged Supabase for authentication, PostgreSQL database with Row Level Security, and serverless Edge Functions for email notifications via Resend API.

Security & Privacy: Implemented end-to-end encryption, anonymized analytics with differential privacy, and GDPR-compliant data handling to ensure employee trust.

Testing & Quality: Comprehensive testing suite with Vitest, Playwright for E2E testing, and Sentry for production monitoring.

Challenges we ran into

Privacy vs. Insights Balance: Providing actionable HR insights without compromising individual privacy required developing sophisticated anonymization algorithms and differential privacy techniques.

Humanizing AI Conversations: Making AI feel empathetic for sensitive mental health discussions involved extensive prompt engineering and conversation flow optimization based on emotional psychology research.
