Inspiration

When looking for mentors this past summer, we found it challenging to find one that matched our skill level and unique interests. Our struggles to find a mentor inspired us to create this website.

What it does

Our website, mentorxmentee, aims to diminish this hurdle by matching students to mentors that suit their interests, goals and experience. We provide students with options among willing mentors who match their set criteria and help them reach out through templates and suggestions. Mentors can also find a mentee who matches their experience and knowledge in a quick effective manner and reach out to them.

How we built it

Due to time constraints, we designed many of the features we plan to implement on Canva. We also began to code our website in React JS, as well as using Netlify to deploy our website.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest obstacle was the limited time available to us. Additionally, learning a new language, React JS, in less than a day was a welcomed challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We really like the concept behind our design as we believe that it is something that will be beneficial to not only ourselves but to all students in STEM. We're also proud that we were able to create a prototype of our website and deploy it in just a few hours.

What we learned

We learned that you don't have to design an extremely complicated project to solve an important issue. It is beneficial to use existing development tools when coding in a short time frame.

What's next for mentorXmentee

Some other feature we’d like to integrate in the future is a looking for work/co-op feature which allows students to add useful links such as linked-in and GitHub. We would also expand our audience to high school students and people in the industry in Waterloo and beyond. Specifically, we would target start-ups and market our website as a better way to find and hire co-op students. We would also like to create an algorithm that is able to generate a summary of mentors which would allow students to see the company they work for and their field of expertise by utilizing linked-in. Finally, we would like to create a mentor and mentee meet-up feature which would occur over teams or zoom.
