Inspiration
Howard students struggle to find the right mentor: someone in their major, with similar aspirations, and a vibe that actually fits them. LinkedIn is too broad, too corporate, and not built for real mentor–mentee relationships. Group chats and random DMs are messy, unorganized, and don’t show a student’s academic and professional story in a clear way.
What it does
MentorMentee is a social, visually-driven mentorship app for Howard students that matches mentees with student and professional mentors based on major, GPA, aspirations, achievements, and campus affiliations.
How we built it
Front-end: React / Next.js (or whichever tools you used) Back-end: Node.js + Express for API endpoints Database: Firebase / MongoDB Design: Figma for UI/UX and branding Matching System: Simple algorithm based on shared interests, skills, and availability We collaborated through GitHub, dividing tasks across UI design, backend development, authentication, data modeling, and integration.
Challenges we ran into
Designing a matching system that felt natural rather than random Balancing simplicity with features — keeping the platform approachable Structuring user profiles in a way that mentors and mentees both found meaningful Integrating authentication and database logic under tight time constraints
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a fully functioning mentor-matching flow from onboarding to connection Building a clean and intuitive interface that genuinely feels inviting Designing a branding system (logo, colors, visuals) that communicates connection
What we learned
How to structure user-to-user matching systems The importance of communication and iteration within a team Balancing technical development with design consistency How rewarding it can be to build something that supports community and mentorship
