Inspiration

A single lunch-and-learn with an expert can change a career—but mentors only have 24 hours a day.
We wondered: what if mentors could “clone” themselves and be available 24/7, with the warmth of face-to-face guidance?
Mentor Me was born to erase every barrier—time zones, scheduling, log-ins, even scrolling—so anyone can share or receive expertise in seconds.

What it does

  • Clone Yourself: Record a short video; Mentor Me trains a Tavus Phoenix replica that speaks in your own voice and likeness.
  • Friction-Free Onboarding: Passwordless OTP (SMS/Email) with auto-fill, plus optional Face ID / Touch ID WebAuthn for one-tap returns.
  • No-Scroll Wizard: Card-by-card slides feel like a story, not a form.
  • Instant Share Link: One click copies myalign.pro/@you, ready for the Web Share API or QR code.
  • Live Help on Demand: Viewers can jump from the async intro to a real-time Twilio Video call whenever they need deeper help.
  • Installable PWA: Works offline and looks native on phones, tablets, and desktops.

How we built it

Layer Stack Highlights
Front-end Next 14, React 18, TypeScript, Tailwind 100dvh slide engine locks scrolling; Zustand manages wizard state.
Auth Supabase + Twilio Verify + WebAuthn Edge functions hydrate session cookies before first paint.
Replicas Tavus REST APIs Custom hook polls training status; Supabase triggers push when ready.
Real-time Twilio Video Token route generates room credentials on demand—no server state.
Payments / ID Stripe Identity + Checkout Mentors verify identity and accept paid sessions.
Deployment Netlify One-click preview → production; Playwright CI blocks bad builds.
Offline Workbox Shell + data caching keeps wizard usable in airplane mode.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Replica Training Lag: Tavus models can take hours; we solved it with optimistic UI, toast updates, and push notifications.
  2. Absolute No-Scroll: Mobile browsers fight for scroll; we trapped wheel/touch events at document root and mapped them to slide actions.
  3. Multi-Factor Edge Cases: Balancing OTP + biometrics across iOS, Android, and desktop required layered fallbacks.
  4. Single-Prompt Deployment Constraints: Packing schema migrations, tests, and service-worker build into one command took surgical package.json scripting.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Zero-scroll, zero-edit deploy anyone can install in under 2 minutes.
  • Human-grade replica quality with < 3 MB client bundle.
  • 99 Lighthouse PWA score (the missing point is Google’s own autoplay rule 😉).
  • End-to-end Playwright suite in Vercel preview that guarantees “it works on every machine.”

What we learned

  • Small DX touches (auto-filled OTP, Web Share API, dark-mode detection) create huge perceived polish.
  • Scroll-free UX forces ruthless prioritization—every extra question feels 10× heavier when it’s a whole screen.
  • Asynchronous AI services need optimistic UI with graceful fallbacks to keep users engaged.
  • Hackathon rule: one secret per feature keeps ENV manageable and docs short.

What's next for Mentor Me

  • Mentor Marketplace: Searchable directory with rating-weighted matchmaking.
  • Real-time AI Co-Pilot: Whisper-powered transcription and GPT-4o sentiment cues during live calls.
  • Multilingual Clones: Automatic dubbing so mentors reach non-English audiences.
  • Revenue-Split Smart Contracts: On-chain payouts for mentors, affiliates, and scholarship funds.
  • Open-Source SDK: Embed a Mentor Me clone in any platform with two lines of code.
