Inspiration
Many foster children are likely to not have access to necessities in order to succeed in life, such as education, health and finance. Sometimes foster kids also experience many struggles, such as not transitioning to secondary education or dealing with behaviorial and mental issues. We want to ensure that these children can have a successful future by having specialized professionals that can guide them in a specific subject or issue.
What it does
Students can sign up with their name and be connected to a mentor, as they guide them in different subject matters. If students sign up to learn subjects such as Math, Science or English, they'll be connected to mentors that are specialized in those areas. In addition, MentorMe also allows professionals of any field to sign up so that students can easily find them.
How we built it
The team utilized the Next framework via Visual Studio Code in order to create the website. We broke down the building blocks into components for our user interface with Material-UI.
Challenges we ran into
The major issue we faced in creating this website was saving an array of courses that the student would choose in checkboxes on the website. In addition, we had to refamiliarize ourselves with the React framework in order to build the website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The website looks visually pleasing and performs with little to no errors.
What we learned
We learned to use the Next framework and Material-UI for this project. In addition, we learned how to incorporate routing into the website.
What's next for MentorMe
MentorMe would need a backend and databases in order for students and mentors to sign up for this website. In addition, MentorMe would have a calendar so that students can easily schedule appointments online with their mentor. Lastly, MentorMe would have an app so that mentors and students to increase conveniency.
