B2 - MentorConnect: Digital Growth for Small Businesses

Inspiration

The inspiration behind MentorConnect stems from the digital knowledge gap that I’ve observed within my community. This lack of digital understanding has often held back creative and innovative ideas from reaching their full potential. By bridging this gap, we can empower small businesses to navigate the digital world confidently and unlock new avenues for growth and innovation.

What it does

MentorConnect is a digital mentorship platform that connects small business owners with industry-specific digital mentors. Through tailored guidance, the platform helps businesses adopt essential digital tools, from e-commerce and online marketing to data analytics, enhancing their ability to compete in today’s digital marketplace. Using AI-driven matching and progress tracking, MentorConnect ensures that each business receives relevant, practical support based on their unique industry and location needs.

How we built it

MentorsConnect will be build in the following steps:

Front-end:

• We will use React.js framework to create the visual interface of the web application, utilizing also third party components frameworks such as chakra ui to speed up the front end development process.

• We will also make use of common react features like lazy loading, server rendering, and react navigation to provide a user with a faster application feel.

• We will make use of great semantic HTML features to enhance code readability and SEO for components that are not from chackra.ui.

-We will make use of meta tags and other SEO strategies to enhance the visibility of our application on the internet.

Backend:

• We will make use of the node.js and express framework to layout the server structure of our application.

• We will create an API to manage user login information, and security.

• We will make use of socket.io API for instant communication, allowing mentee and mentors to send messages to each other.

• We will also make use of the Gpt4 api in conjunction with our own search api to make the ai based matching system.

• Finally we will make use of AWS cloud services to host and publish our applications to the internet

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges we might face is regarding the prompt engineering for the Gpt4. Finding the best prompt is necessary to make the ai matching system work.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have started this amazing project and we are hopeful and excited to see the effect or our efforts on the lives of small business owners.

What we learned

This project taught us resilience, and courage in the persuit of our dreams. The project also taught us a lot about how important mentorship is to the live of small business owners, according to sources, about 50% of small businesses die after 5 years, however 70% of business with mentorship programs tend to survive after five years. This project indeed taught us about the significance of mentoring for small businesses.

What's next for MentorConnect: Digital

We plan to implement our solution and help small businesses owners succeed.
