Inspiration
The SSE Mentoring Lab was our inspiration for this project. As members of this community, we thought about implementing a gamified version of our day-to-day involvement as mentors in the SSE.
What it does
This is a game where you play as a mentor whose job is to help as many mentees as possible. If you fail to do so, your health meter will go down and you will eventually lose the game.
How we built it
We built this game using C and OpenGL. We wrote our own game engine because we wanted to take up a challenge and learn about the inner workings of Computer Graphics Principles.
Challenges we ran into
Implementing our own game engine is difficult since everything needs to be done at a very low level.
We had initially planned a full fledged game with multiple classes, methods etc., but we could barely figure out how to implement buttons and basic inputs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We got our code to compile despite the challenging task of creating a makefile with several levels of dependencies, libraries, and directories
We got basic input and event handling implemented for a game
What we learned
PlantUML, OpenGL, C Makefiles and dealing with hierarchies and directories
What's next for Mentor Melee
Possibly, a complete implementation with a more complex game structure
