Inspiration
Through Starhacks, the ability to connect and network with fellow developers was an amazing experience. Harboring that and keeping the theme of "building bridges" in mind, we decided to create a 'companionship and dating' structured app, that allows developers to build partnerships, teams, collaborations, and also find mentors to strengthen their programming skills, and bridge reciprocity within the tech community.
What it does
Similar to dating apps, such as Bumble and Tinder, individuals can select through users within the app, depending on their tech stack, experience, project ideas, etc. It allows users to connect, network, and also obtain access to resources and tools from fellow developers and other tech-inspired individuals.
- Pairs mentors with mentees based on skill levels, experience, and needs
- Provide safe space for minorities, and people with disabilities in the tech
- Text-to-speech accessibility features
How we built it
Through Figma, a mockup was drawn up to help us conceptualize what we wanted the app to look like. We plan to build and expand on the project utilizing:
FRONT-END
- HTML, CSS, JavaScript (React.js, Bootstrap), etc.
BACK-END COMPONENTS and FRAMEWORKS
- Ruby/Python, Heroku/Netlify, PostgreSQL, etc.
Challenges we ran into
Limited time to implement all of our ideas and structures for the code within the deadline given. All of us are relatively new to hackathons, and some still being programmers with limited experience in building apps from the ground up.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a mockup UI/UX for an idea, given such a short deadline. Working together in thinking creatively and passionately about the project and pushing to create and update the project even after the hackathon ends.
What we learned
The project management life cycle, going through it with little idea of how to begin our app. From initiation, planning, and proposals for the execution substantially motivated the group to get started on a real-world project that can not only help us as a collective group together but for others just like us who are learning.
What's next for the mentor app
We plan to keep moving forward in the creation of the app and updating various features to create an environment for developers to interact and learn from each other. Hopefully, setting up collaborations, teams, finding mentorship, and guidance.
