Inspiration

Due to the lack of representation we faced as women in STEM, and difficulties transitioning to university, we wanted to create a community to bridge the connection between minorities in STEM.

What it does

mentHERship allows students to join as a mentee to connect with a mentor who has been in the same boat as them. The can chat with each other on the website to learn and exchange ideas. Also, being a mentor or mentee gives students a chance to join exclusive workshops and tutorials!

How we built it

First we brainstormed our ideas and decided on what main goal we had. After settling on our idea, we broke the project up into sections and delegated to each person. We collaborated constantly and helped each other with issues and ideas. We used Figma to sketch the model of our website, and then designed our vision with the Javascript, React and Node.js.

Challenges we ran into

We came across several challenges while creating our project. We learned to use services that we have never used before, such as Twilio, Hedera Hash graph and distributed ledger. Additionally, prioritizing and delegating tasks in order to be time efficient and avoid merge conflicts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were able to work so well as a team to work on a project that we are passionate about. We put over 24 hours into a project and finished it with all our goal programs used. Additionally we are very proud of the experience we got learning React.

What we learned

This opportunity taught as numerous important lessons. We have always heard about the concept of blockchain, but this project allowed us to get practical experience with distributed ledger technology. We learned how to successfully work collaboratively in a group with a time crunch. We also learned very important problem solving skills when creating our project with the new tools.

What's next for mentHERship

Our passion for increasing diversity in STEM doesn't stop here. We hope to continue to spread knowledge between minorities in STEM by giving them a community to be a part of. We hope that women and non-binary people join mentHERship in order to feel seen in the tech world and meet others that also feel like outsiders.
