Inspiration
The idea for MentHer came from observing that many women entering tech and professional spaces lack access to mentorship and safe communities. There is often hesitation in asking questions, limited peer networks, and difficulty finding relevant opportunities. This inspired me to build a platform that creates a supportive ecosystem specifically for women.
What it does
MentHer is a mentorship and community platform for women in tech and related fields. It allows users to discover mentors based on their skills and goals, connect through chat, join interest-based communities, ask questions anonymously, and explore curated opportunities and events.
How we built it
The platform was built as a full-stack web application using React.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for the frontend. Supabase was used for authentication and backend services, with PostgreSQL as the database. The initial UI and structure were generated using Lovable, and then extended by integrating database functionality and dynamic features.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was the cold start problem, as platforms like this require active users to feel meaningful. This was addressed by seeding realistic data. Another challenge was migrating static frontend data to a live database without breaking the application. Handling authentication flows and email verification during local development also required careful configuration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully building a fully functional mentorship and community platform within a limited timeframe is a key accomplishment. The platform integrates multiple features such as mentorship discovery, community interaction, anonymous discussions, and opportunity sharing into a single cohesive system. It also maintains a clean and modern user experience.
What we learned
This project provided hands-on experience in building a full-stack application, working with Supabase for authentication and database management, and designing relational data structures. It also highlighted the importance of user experience, iterative development, and building systems that address real-world problems.
What's next for MentHer - Mentorship & Community Platform for Women in Tech
Future improvements include enhancing mentor matching, adding real-time notifications, improving moderation systems, and expanding the platform to support a larger user base. The long-term vision is to evolve this into a scalable ecosystem that connects women across different industries and regions.
