A Clear Problem Statement
The social, political, and economic challenges in Mindanao have caused a toll in people’s mental health especially among the youth. However, seeking help may be limited by physical restrictions, lack of access to professional help, and even their personal hesitation.
Identified Challenge Area
Isolation & Mental Health, Education
Inspiration
Mental health has been a pressing issue in the country yet it seems that there is still much that needs to be done in terms of mental health especially here in Mindanao. Studies suggest that mental health may be the next pandemic so we need to start doing something now.
Target Users/Audience
The mobile app is specifically designed for the Mindanao youth.
What is the Proposed Solution
MENTanaw (from the words “mental” and “tan-aw” – a Visayan word for “look”) is a mobile app which allows users to look after their mental health. This mobile app is designed to help the youth nurture their mental well-being through a variety of features. The following are the app features:
- Tan-aw (Mental Check)
- Giya (Mental Guides)
- Lihok (Mental Exercises)
- Tala-adlawan (M-Journal)
- Storya Ta! (Mental Link)
Other Features: • The mobile app will be available in English and Bisaya so that it could really reach out to Mindanaons. • The Storya Ta! (Mental Link) feature allows registered mental health professionals (counselors, psychologists) or institutions to add their selves in the directory of available mental health professionals whom users could contact for professional help.
Why is it relevant?
This pandemic warrants the need to address the mental health needs of people. But even when this pandemic is over, we would still need to constantly help ensure people’s mental well-being.
How did we build it?
We are a team of educators who felt the need to do something to help address the mental health needs of the youth which are heightened during this pandemic.
Accomplishments we're proud of
We were able to expand a small idea by working together and thinking outside the box!
Challenges we encountered
Financial sustainability. IT expertise. But by collaborating with others, all is good!
What did we learn?
As educators, we need to continually step up to address the needs of the youth beyond the classroom.
What technology did we use to build it?
We plan to use Xamarin for app development.
