Inspiration

Mental health is a serious issue and people should hold emphasis on it. We see numerous public figures, as well as normal citizens, take their own lives when they don't realize how beautiful they are. I hope everyone can have a heart hard as metal, stay strong with our own beliefs and live the life we want.

What it does

This website contains two simple pages, containing information about mental health. One page shows a dashboard with multiple interactive graphs that have information about mental health and tobacco use. The other page contains a link to an interactive story game that talks about dealing with anxiety.

How we built it

React is used for frontend, and Flask and Python are used for backend.

Challenges we ran into

While it took some time to find useful datasets, it is fortunate the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) dataset found had so much information that I didn't have enough time to analyze all the data given. I also struggled with UI formatting since I do not have that much React experience. Another challenge I met was the database. I was planning to use MongoDB, but unfortunately, my laptop ran into some problems regarding pymongo version compatibility, so I had no choice but to leave it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I was happy that I was finally able to integrate backend and frontend because I struggled with it for a previous hackathon and for other projects as well.

What we learned

It was very challenging to solo a hackathon, but I am glad that I did so because I gained more knowledge of full stack as a whole.

What's next for MetalPedal

There is yet a lot to explore for the BRFSS dataset found, which means more interactive graphs can be displayed. It is also nice to add constructive steps or tips to help strengthen people's mental health.
