Inspiration
Since we as teenagers have experience using social media, we understand how social media platforms have affected us and our peers. Seeing these effects and the negative experiences we have encountered, we decided to create a website to propose a solution to some of the negative effects of social media on mental health, especially for minors. The website would also help to raise awareness and bring attention about these effects.
What it does
Our website has multiple different tabs in order to showcase all the different components of the website, such as what topics we are exploring, resources to share, and a few ways to help users with their own mental health. These different tabs help raise awareness and bring attention to mental health. Through our website, we also have proposed a solution to combat the negative effects seen on minors using social media. Our solution is to create an extension that can be added to social media platforms that would add additional security measures to ensure that the content seen to those under the age of 14 are filtered and monitored to not display any inappropriate or harmful media/comments.
How we built it
We used the text editor Replit in order to start our code, and then we used languages, HTML and CSS in order to add the components. Each of us had specific sections to work on, such as working on adding pictures, figuring out the specific text to add, and adding the color scheme to CSS.
Challenges we ran into
A challenge we ran into was figuring out a platform for all of us to work on. We initially tried using Atom and GitHub but realized that none of us had used them before, so we were having trouble navigating through them. After much discussion and recommending other platforms, we finally settled on Replit. Replit allowed us to all work on a single code collaboratively. Another challenge we ran into was figuring out the color scheme. Making sure that the design was aesthetically pleasing and easy to look at proved difficult, so we had to change the color schemes often and then eventually settled on one that looked good.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
An accomplishment we're proud of is how we were able to create a platform for users to spread awareness about protecting mental health. Since one of our challenges was that not being able to find a platform to work on together, finding Replit was a relief for us. Not only that, but our website came together really well, so we're proud of how clean and put together it looks.
What we learned
We all had some HTML experience; however, we all learned a little bit more about it through some of the different attributes and syntaxes that we used. Not only that, but some of us weren't too familiar with CSS so we also learned about that. Another thing we learned is how to use Replit and how to collaborate together on a single platform. It was a little difficult at first, but we were able to manage.
What's next for Mental Health Project
We are planning on possibly building an app extension to filter out harmful material on social media for minors, and the next phase of the project would be to actually create this extension.
