Inspiration

There's a pervasive myth that the mental health epidemic is teen centric and caused my social media, it's truly an issue for all Americans. My brother and I lost a classmate to suicide, and it has had an impact on our school community. Recently I did a project on the top leading causes of death in the US for my Kinesiology class, so we decided to combine that research with our love of computer science to create an information slideshow to educate people on the true causes of mental health issues in the US and provide information for those seeking help.

What it does

It provides statistics about mental health from the 1900s to today, as well as specific information about how social media impacts teens, and links to helpful resources.

How we built it

We created a slideshow on Wolfram that includes bar charts, pie charts, a timeline, and a collection of hyperlinked images.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into issues with the Wolfram platform itself crashing and glitching out, preventing us from coding as quickly as normal. We also struggled to create the timeline, as we were unable to modify the bounds. We researched extensively and received help from the server, but the platform was still glitching.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have learned how to use Wolfram.

What we learned

We learned the basics of how to use Wolfram and got experience for future Hackathons.

What's next for Mental Health: It's Not Just a Teen Crisis (or Social Media)

We plan to continue adding more information and resources, as well as adding interactive and gaming components.
