Inspiration
The theme of social good reminded our team of the evergrowing mental health crisis that is affecting current teens and young adults. With most of them spending their time online, it is easy to get lost looking for a mental health resource that is right for them. That's why we worked on building the Mental Health Compendium, where various sources are gathered into one place, categorized into different topics/services that anyone may need.
What it does
Shows a list of hyperlinks to other mental health resources and a list of mental health related hotlines. It acts as a one stop shop for mental health resources.
How we built it
We used React.js, HTML and CSS to build the website, and used GitHub as version control.
Challenges we ran into
Due to varying experience levels and different skills, communicating our visions became difficult. However, we stayed resolute in trying to understand what we each wanted to communicate. In addition, one of our members was sick with REALLY BAD food poisoning, so it presented an additional hurdle that we had to overcome.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to gather a lot of mental health resources and build a functional site around it. It's not the most complex project, but nonetheless it is an achievement we are proud of and believe can create a positive social impact. In creating this website, we also learned a lot from each other and expanded our technical skillsets.
What we learned
We learned how to cooperate as a team through various obstacles, and how to stay focused in stressed situations.
What's next for Mental Health Compendium
The Mental Health Compendium has future plans of including a forum, where users can share their thoughts on various mental health issues, and educate each other as a community. We will also be adding more sources, and a more fine-tuned UI/UX
