Mental health is an important issue, especially during Covid. 53% of US adults report a significant negative impact on mental health, due to covid-19. Even prior to COVID-19, mental health issues have been increasingly prevalent among adults. In 2017-2018, 19% of adults experienced a mental illness, an increase of 1.5mn.
What it does
Tell Me Something Good is a project that aims to take as input how the user is feeling and output an affirmation or words of encouragement.
Tell Me Something Good uses the Google Cloud Natural Language REST API to analyze a users submitted feeling(s) and determine the sentiment of their submission. The application uses Google's Cloud Natural Language Machine Learning to compare and determine whether what the user is inputting is positive or negative. The REST API sends back and object of the results, and the script then outputs an affirmation if it's a positive message or words or encouragement if it's a negative statement.
How we built it
Challenges we ran into
Getting the Google Cloud Natural Language REST API authentication was a little challenging at first, we weren't very experienced with Google Cloud services going into this. Once we got the authentication figured out, communicating with the service was no problem.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Accurately getting a sentiment score using the API and then analyzing it to hopefully help others.
What we learned
Getting a better understanding of Google Cloud and its services (some very useful stuff in there).
What's next for Mental Health App
We would like to leverage some ML (machine learning) to more accurately respond with a positive message.
We would like to convert the application to a chat bot or virtual assistant too.
