Inspiration

I always talked with my friend Jordi how Suriname doesn't really have a website where everyone can interact with the Surinamese community. On top of that, we found it super amusing to see people discuss the news in the comments of news article. The problem is that these communities are either fragmented by the articles themselves or the news source. We also wanted a Surinamese archive. While this project doesn't fully encapsulate that, it does implement some of it by archiving forums, news articles and covid19 data.

What it does

Users can make a posts out of news articles and discuss the contents or voice their opinions in the created discussion threads. But users can also create their own forum threads with their own titles/questions about different topics. The site serves as a community forum, but also a place of knowledge with data about covid19.

How we built it

We first designed the prototype in Figma, since there was a lot of back and forth between layouts. When we decided on the front-end, we created the API's and used MongoDB as the database for the forums and news articles, while some of the data gets saved on a Redis database.

Challenges we ran into

What was the fastest way to store data so the user receives the minimum amount of latency. We opted for SSR (server side rendering) as it provides a better user experience. We needed to find out the best way to flag out misinformation and choose to leave it to the community.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a much nicer and cleaner interface for the news aggregate and for the covid19 banner than our competitors. Not having to force users to have a certain opinion is something we're proud to present.

What we learned

How to work with the technologies used, but also how to work together as a team which was the most important thing in our journey.

What's next for Adoro

After a decent userbase, we're going to improve the UI/UX and add more accessibility features. Addition of crowd funded news investigators who debunk certain articles or beliefs and help the community overall.
