Inspiration

There are countless journaling apps and platforms currently out there. One thing we constantly noticed, though, is that once you're done writing... You're just done. Left there with whatever thoughts and emotions you had written. Sometimes, you're left craving feedback or input, and not everyone can afford to go to therapy. That's where Mend comes in. While not a licensed therapist, we wanted to utilize AI to help users identify recurring issues in their life and come up with some solid ways to address them.

What it does

Mend is a journaling app that employs Google's Gemini AI API to help those who love to journal and write down their thoughts and frustrations for the day. What sets Mend apart is its AI integration where we can understand and help you with what you consistently have trouble with, whether it is dealing with certain feelings or emotions behaviors which trouble you or impact your day-to-day, Mend is here to help you understand and overcome them. Mend is here to help you understand your feelings in a way that is more intuitive than just writing down your thoughts for the day. Every week of journaling, Mend rewards you with an analysis based on recurring themes that were disucussed throughout the week and help you work through them with suggestions, and activities to help you overcome what has been troubling you. With our secure AI client, you can rest assured that your thoughts and feelings are safe and secure.

How we built it

Frontend: HTML, CSS
Backend: Javascript, PHP
Database: MariaDB
API: Google's Gemini AI API
Authentication: Personally Hosted Login
Deployment: AWS Lightsail
Version Control: Git
Project Management: Trello
Design: Figma
Collaboration: Slack

Challenges we ran into

There was trouble with formatting much of the text on the site to still give clarity to users on what they're supposed to do, while still looking clean and uncluttered. In addition, linking the front-end to the back-end took the most time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Utilization of Google's Gemini AI API. A working login system.

What we learned

Git commands for some of our newer, first-time hackers. Team collaboration, as some of our team members have only worked alone at their former hackathons. Version control.

What's next for Mend

Completing our incorporation of AI. Having users be able to select a time period to analyze, instead of it auto-completing at a week. Customizable journal design. Printing/sharing options from the journal page. Possibility of a prompt system for users that can't figure out what to write. Users being able to insert photos to their journal entries.
