Inspiration
Journals are mostly text and can feel disconnected from the memories they hold. We wanted memories to feel visual, interactive, and alive.
What it does
MemoryPlanet turns your journal into a growing 3D toy planet. Each memory becomes a building and each person becomes a character who walks between their memories. The planet grows from 42 to 1,002 tiles as you write. You can spin it, or fold it into an island and walk your own character around. Journaling earns coins for themes, pets and treats. It also wins over hostile pirate ships, which you can't buy.
How we built it
We used vanilla JavaScript, Three.js and CC0 Kenney assets on a spherical hex-and-pentagon grid, with accounts and cloud journals on Supabase. AI is only an assist, and everything works offline without it.
Challenges we ran into
Growing the planet while keeping every saved memory in place was hard. So was coiling the sphere's land into a playable island, with solid buildings, tile heights and animated characters.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a fully interactive 3D journal with persistent memories, five planet sizes, planet and island views, a walkable character, and progression driven by journaling itself.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Three.js, spherical grids, skinned-model animation and persistent state. We also learned to build AI features with fallbacks, so they never break the demo.
What's next for MemoryPlanet
Next we want solid trees and rocks, hills you can climb, and clickable residents that show their memories. We also want chimney smoke, more customization and shared multiplayer planets.
